Metrohm Autolab began in the 1980s at Utrecht University, where two electrochemists from the well known research group around Prof. J. H. Sluyters, Dr. Kees van Velzen and Dr. Gertjan Brug, developed the first computer-controlled potentiostats. In 1986, they founded a company called Eco Chemie to bring this innovation to the scientific community.

After 40 years, the company remains based in Utrecht and has grown into one of the most recognized manufacturers of instrumentation for electrochemical research.

After joining the Metrohm Group in 1999 and becoming Metrohm Autolab in 2009, the company expanded its global presence significantly. Today, Autolab instruments are used in thousands of laboratories across more than 100 countries.
